Opening Odds

So with my next tournament in June fast approaching the key question of course remains: What to play?

There are a number of factors to consider:

1) I am the TO for my local community and as such I prefer to play something relatively straightforward so that I can answer rules queries, keep things organised etc. as much a fan of Cadmus & Nexus as I am I don’t think playing something overly complex is probably a good idea. Sorry Hamelin.

2) I like to promote a wide faction spread/I am a hideous snowflake. These amount to the same thing pretty much. The last Tournament I ran had the following spread, of which I was one of the Neverborn players and came 4th (the perfect TO result).

I played 3 very fun games getting a win, a draw and a loss. Being in the most popular of factions does not sit well with me for both of the reasons above so of course something has to change!

Maybe.

Option 1) Play Guild. I like Guild, the playstyle is relatively straight forward and what it lacks in nuance it makes up for with a big stick/gun/fireball/robot.  This longstanding/long ignored blog was a dedicated Guild blog originally and the Witch Hunter project represented this. But of course going from Neverborn to Guild just makes Guild an even more dominating presence.

Option 2) Stay in Neverborn, but play masters other people don’t. Relatively straightforward. One of our Neverborn players won the tournament whilst playing Dreamer all day, another played Zoraida/Kastore/Dreamer and I played Lucius & Pandora. So not a lot of crossover already. Plus I have ideas and plans for Savage to add that ❄️ Darkhorse delight. But of course this just presents the same spread as last time.  Battle fatties are always a temptation.

Option 3) play Bayou! Nobody else is playing Bayou! The problem here is, as much as I like Bayou and even have several keywords all painted up and ready to go….I am fairly shit with Bayou. Quite a lot shit in fact. Which is problematic. Also I found the Ashes releases for Bayou thoroughly unappealing, especially when compared to what other factions got.

Option 4) Outcasts. Nobody played Outcasts last time! I own Amalgam, Bygone, Infamous (see above), Torment & Plague (see further above). This feels like a definite possibility, and were you a gambling man and felt like gambling on this ridiculousness this would be a solid option. A variety of play-styles and aesthetics and all of them got some very solid additions from Ashes. Aside from Bygone, who got a stupid windsurfer.  Good odds here.

Option 5) Rezzers. The original home faction. I’ve not spent a lot of time in Rezzers for M3E partly because I spent so much time playing Nicodem and Reva in m2e and partly because there’s only so many zombies you can paint. I have purposely stayed away from Ms Cortina this edition mainly as Decaying Aura no longer exists so I can’t just slap it on her and have Horse-nun Go Brrrr be a thing anymore.  Whenever I’ve looked at Revenant this edition it has made zero sense.  However a couple of days chatting with Maniacal Cackle and JFV, watching some MWS videos and I think I know enough to want to try it out on a FFF in the future.  So this is a definite contender.

Option 6) Ten Thunders! Nobody played TT last time? But what do I look like to you? Some kind of weeb? Absolutely not.

So that’s where I am right now, with only limited time to make my mind up and get painting.

Place your bets now!
